SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF CHRISTOS TSITSAROS
Christos Tsitsaros was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, and received his first
formal musical instruction by Nora Karasik at the Greek Musical Academy
(directed by prof. George Arvanitakis). At the age of 13 he won
first
prize at the National Competition of the Conservatory of Athens in
memory
of Keti Papaioannou. In 1979 he went to Poland where he studied at
the
Frederic Chopin Academy of Warsaw under the guidance of prof. Jan Ekier.
As
a result of winning the Gina Bahauer Institution competion in Athens
(1981), he continued his pianistic studies in Paris and graduated from
the
Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris within a year, obtaining the Diplome
Superieur d'Execution with distinction. While in Paris, he studied
with
pianists Aldo Ciccolini and Jean-Claude Pennetier. In 1986, a
scholarship
from the A. G. Leventis Foundation enabled him to go to the United
States
and study with prof. Gyorgy Sebok at the School of Music of Indiana
University. He graduated in 1989 with an Artist Diploma and a Masters
in
Music, and subsequently entered the School of Music of the University
of
Illinois. There he studied piano with prof. Ian Hobson
and composition
with the late composer Salvatore Martirano. In 1993, he was awarded
the
Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Perfrormance and joined the
faculty
of the Piano Pedagogy division of the University of Illinois.
He was a
winner of the 1992 composition competition of the National Conference
on
Piano Pedagogy and has since developed an ongoing relation with Hal
Leonard
Publishing Corporation and Frederick Harris Music (Canada). His
published
piano works include Blackbirds at Ueno, Cinderella Suite, Nine Tales,
Songs
and Dances and Looking in the Mirror. Last year he released his
first
compact disc album containing selections from his original piano works
(Centaur Records). In addition he has participated at various
workshops
and conferences as a performer and lecturer and has appeared in recitals
and chamber music concerts in Europe and the United States.
